Stone Chip Repair in Blackburn
Stone chips are the quiet killer of car paintwork. They look small, but each one is a direct route for water and road salt to reach bare metal — and once rust starts, the damage spreads fast under the paint surface where you can't see it. At Ewood Pitstop LTD in Blackburn, we repair stone chips properly: matched paint, sealed finish, invisible result.
Stone chip repair is part of our full bodywork and paint service in Blackburn. If the chips are on the bonnet and widespread, see our stone chip repair guide for advice on your options.
Why stone chips must be repaired quickly
A fresh stone chip that's just broken through the paint coat is a straightforward, affordable fix. Leave it for a season of UK weather and you're looking at rust bubbling under the paint across a much wider area. The longer you wait, the more expensive the repair becomes.
Fresh chip — paint and primer exposed
Water enters the chip but can't penetrate deeply yet. Clean the chip, apply matched paint, seal with lacquer. Quick fix, low cost, invisible result.
After a few weeks — surface rust forming
A small rust spot forms at the base of the chip. The repair area is now slightly larger. Still manageable but needs treating before it spreads.
After a season — rust spreading under paint
Rust tracks under the paint film, creating bubbles or blistering around the original chip. The repair area may now be 10x the original chip size. Significantly more expensive.
After a year+ — structural concern
Deep rust can eventually affect the panel itself. At this point you're looking at panel repair, not chip repair. Prevention is dramatically cheaper.
Where stone chips most commonly occur
Certain areas of every vehicle are hit hardest by road debris, gravel and loose stones. These are the areas we see most frequently:
Bonnet leading edge
The most exposed part of the car at speed. Motorway and A-road driving throws debris directly at this area. Even new cars chip here within months.
Front bumper
Chips and paint transfer from road debris, following distance and low-speed scrapes. Stone chips here are common and usually easy to repair when caught early.
Front wings
Just behind the wheel arch — road debris thrown up by the front tyres impacts here. Often a cluster of small chips rather than isolated ones.
Lower door sills
Road grit and stones thrown up from the rear tyres hit the lower door edges. Common on vehicles driven in rural areas or on gravel roads.
Rear bumper
Debris from the vehicle's own rear wheels can chip the lower bumper area. Less common than front-end damage but worth addressing.
Roof edges
On estates and SUVs, the roof edge takes hits from motorway grit. Less visible but exposed to rust if left.
How we repair stone chips properly
We don't use touch-up pens. The result is always visible and never seals the chip properly. Professional stone chip repair at Ewood Pitstop LTD uses matched paint and proper application technique.
Clean and assess
Each chip is cleaned and assessed individually. Any existing rust is treated before paint is applied — skipping this step causes the repair to fail.
Colour match
Paint is mixed to your vehicle's exact colour code. This is the difference between a professional repair and a visible patch.
Fill and seal
Paint is applied carefully into each chip in thin layers. The goal is to fill the chip flush without overfilling and creating a raised area.
Lacquer and blend
A clear coat is applied to seal and protect the repair. On areas with multiple chips, we may blend across the panel for a consistent finish.
If the chips are very widespread across the bonnet or multiple panels, a partial respray may give a better result than individual chip repairs. We'll advise honestly on which approach makes sense for your specific situation.
