Car Battery Replacement in Blackburn

A failing car battery is one of the leading causes of breakdown in the UK — and in Lancashire's cold winters, battery failures increase dramatically. If your car is slow to start, the engine cranks slowly, you're seeing a battery warning light, or you've recently had a jump start, the battery and charging system needs testing before it leaves you stranded.

At Ewood Pitstop LTD we always test the battery AND the charging system (alternator and regulator) before recommending a replacement. A weak battery can be a symptom of a failing alternator — replacing the battery without checking the alternator results in the new battery going flat within days. Battery and charging system services

Battery test

We test battery voltage at rest and under load, and measure cold cranking amps (CCA) against the required specification for your vehicle. A battery that reads 12.6V at rest can still fail under the load of starting the engine.

Battery replacement

We supply and fit quality replacement batteries matched to your vehicle's specification — including EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) and AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries for start-stop vehicles. The correct battery type is important — fitting a standard battery in a start-stop vehicle significantly reduces battery life.

Alternator test

We test alternator output voltage (should be 13.8–14.4V when running) and charging current. A failing alternator that isn't keeping the battery topped up will drain even a new battery within days.

Alternator replacement

Where the alternator is failing, we supply and fit quality remanufactured or new alternators. We confirm the fault with the new unit before returning the vehicle.

Battery drain diagnosis

If your battery is going flat overnight, there's a parasitic drain — something is drawing power from the battery when the car is off. We carry out a draw test to identify the circuit causing the drain.

Start-stop system reset

Many modern vehicles with start-stop require the battery to be 'registered' to the ECU after replacement. Skipping this step causes premature battery failure. We carry out registration where required.

Warning signs of a failing battery

Slow or sluggish starting — Battery losing capacity — most obvious on cold mornings.
Battery warning light on dashboard — Charging system fault — could be battery or alternator.
Engine cranks but won't fire — Battery too weak to sustain cranking long enough to start.
Lights dimming when starting — Battery can't maintain voltage during the starting load.
Battery going flat overnight — Parasitic drain or battery failing to hold charge.
Clicking sound when turning key — Solenoid clicking but insufficient power to turn the starter motor.
