An MOT is a legal roadworthiness test. A service is preventative maintenance. They're related, but they are not the same.
What an MOT checks
An MOT focuses on safety and basic compliance—lights, brakes, tyres, suspension, emissions and structural issues. It does not guarantee your car is mechanically "healthy"; it checks whether it meets minimum legal standards at the time of the test.
What a service does
A service is aimed at reliability and long-term condition—oil and filters, inspections, fluids, and wear items based on schedule. Servicing reduces breakdown risk and often prevents MOT failures by catching issues early.
Do you need both?
In practice, yes. If you only MOT the vehicle and never service it, you risk:
- Avoidable failures
- Expensive repairs later
- Reduced reliability
If you already know your vehicle needs maintenance, our car servicing page explains how to get it booked in.
FAQs
Can I get an MOT and service on the same day?
Yes — this is the most efficient option. Book both together and we'll schedule them back-to-back. If the MOT finds issues, we can often address them while the car is already here.
Does a service guarantee an MOT pass?
No — a service doesn't cover all MOT testable items. However, a good service catches many common failure points (lights, wipers, brakes) before the MOT.
How often should I service my car?
Most manufacturers recommend annual servicing or every 12,000 miles — whichever comes first. Check your handbook for the specific schedule for your vehicle.
